We left a busy month behind, in which the art speaks for itself… We felt as if many exhibitions, many artists and hundreds of works of art were in our pockets:) Now let's take a look from a wider range and talk about Design Biennial. What is biennial? When is it organized?
Biennial is an organization intertwined with contemporary art, and its beginning is based on ancient years. This word of French origin means "every other year" and is organized every two years. Usually it is used for artistic and cultural events. It is held in Venice for the first time in 1985. Today, biennials are known as the biggest artistic activities and are also the environments where the cities introduce the message 'I'm here' to the world. Biennials have themes and at the same time there may be more than one theme. Now I want to talk a bit about this year's Istanbul Design Biennial.
IKSV, the official accommodation sponsor of The Marmara Hotels for more than 25 years, has pioneered fabulous projects this year as well. 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, whose fourth is organized this year, is taking place between the dates of September 22 and November 4. This year's title of this organization which would interest Istanbul's art lovers and contemporary artists and offers inspirational idea is "Schools of Schools". "School of Schools" with its quite curiousity arousing name, teaches creative cooperations and offers an instruction format to infuse social connections. According to my study, Biennial examines six different themes. It offers different and unique design environments for academies, workshops, laboratories, encyclopedic museums etc.
At the same time, ‘School of Schools’ is characterized by the participation of very different people. It combines the concepts of contrast, thanks to the participation of practitioners of different ages from Turkey and abroad. For example, amateurism and the academy, the old and the new… And it focuses on the results in this process in a serious way. The participants of the Biennial will firstly learn to create and the new, will create new information and look for alternatives to the existing systems.
Finally, the Design Biennial is spread out over 6 locations in Beyoglu. If you also like Beyoglu and interested in contemporary art, I advise you to closely follow the Design Biennial. For example, you can leave The Marmara Taksim and go to Akbank Sanat to see Istanbul Biennial's Collective Mapping Workhop on October 9-10. Don't forget to drink coffee to unwind at The Marmara Pera, after touring the fun streets of Taksim. You can examine the Biennial web page for all the details about the events. Lots of love!
