Interior of the Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar of Istanbul is a vibrant and lively marketplace that is renowned for its exceptional character. With over 61 streets and thousands of shops, it is one of the oldest covered markets in the world and is unlike any other destination you will encounter.

The Grand Bazaar is a place where the essence of the illustrious Ottoman Empire is still present, manifesting in various ways such as customs, traditions, and a diverse selection of merchandise. The bazaar has served as the commercial hub of the Ottoman Empire since the conquest of Constantinople by Mehmed the Conqueror, and to this day, it remains a vibrant marketplace where artisans offer an extensive array of products, including carpets, high-end items, tea, lanterns, and handcrafted ceramics.

Beyond being a mere market, the Grand Bazaar stands as a testament to a bygone era, preserving the essence of a once-mighty empire. It serves as a living reminder of a rich historical way of life, bringing together the diverse communities of Istanbul and visitors from around the globe in a harmonious setting.

History of the Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar was established by Mehmed II, the Ottoman sultan who conquered Constantinople, now known as Istanbul, with the intention of restoring the city's pre-war prosperity. Originally intended as a hub for jewel and textile trading, the Grand Bazaar was built close to the Old Palace, where the Ottoman royalty resided. The building that housed the Grand Bazaar was first assigned to the Hagia Sophia waqf, a charitable trust under Islamic law.

Over the years, various markets, both covered and open-air, were integrated into the Grand Bazaar. These included a second-hand market, a book market, and a slave trade market that had been in existence since Byzantine times. By the early 1600s, the Grand Bazaar had taken on a form similar to what it retains today. Within its walls, there were mosques, public squares, fountains, and, of course, thousands of shops.

Over the centuries, the Grand Bazaar has faced challenges such as earthquakes, fires, and competition from European markets, but it has always managed to rebuild and evolve. Its most recent restoration took place in 1980.

What to Buy at the Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is widely recognized as one of the city's most renowned landmarks, and it's easy to see why. As the oldest shopping mall in the world, it has a unique advantage in terms of the diversity of goods it offers, as well as its fascinating history. While most shops today have fixed prices, there are still some that engage in the traditional practice of bargaining, which has been passed down through Ottoman times.

The Grand Bazaar is a shopper’s paradise with endless options available throughout its streets, alleyways, arcades, and squares. From hand-woven carpets and textiles to antique lanterns, ceramics, engraved metalware, jewelry, and sweets, the market offers a vast array of Turkish specialties. The best way to experience the Grand Bazaar is to stroll through it, soaking in the ambiance and offerings. However, with an area of over 30,700 square meters, it may take several days to explore the entire complex. Don't forget to try the tea offered to you by shopkeepers, an essential part of Turkish hospitality that may lead to interesting conversations.
