A trip to Bodrum, Turkey, would not be complete without a visit to one of its most famous landmarks. Prominently sitting high on a hill of the Bodrum peninsula are the windmills. While they have long gone out of service, the windmills are a must-see stop for thousands of tourists each year. For some, they are a glimpse into history and culture. For others, it is a chance to see the vast land from a new perspective. Then finally, for some, they are simply a beautiful spot for grabbing some great vacation pictures.

Windmill History

The windmills of Bodrum were initially built in the 18th century. Their use continued until the 1970s, when they were replaced by motor power.

When in operation, the windmills were integral to life in Bodrum and the city’s economy. They had to be built sturdy to ensure their continued operation. They constantly operated throughout the year because flour would mold and worm easily. So, to prevent the loss of much-needed food supplies, people would only grind enough wheat to meet their monthly needs.

Exploring the Windmills

There are seven windmills in total. However, they are all in varying stages of dereliction and decay. Unfortunately, they were not maintained once the windmills were no longer in use. As a result, only two of the windmills are in very good condition. You are able to walk around the outside of all of the windmills. You can also go inside some of them and see how they once worked.

The windmills are made of stone that was quarried from the very hills where they sit today. Only one of the remaining windmills still has its original blades that would turn in the wind to power the wheat grinder within. This windmill has a fence around it to prevent visitors from getting too close to protect the windmill and visitors.

In addition to the windmills, the breathtaking panoramic view is worth the trek. The windmills are situated on a hill on the northwest portion of the Bodrum peninsula between Bodrum and Gumbet. When at the highest point, you can see Bodrum, Gumbet, and the Kos Greek islands. For a truly unique experience, visit in the evening and watch the sunset and then take in the nighttime views.

There are also the ruins of three windmills near the Yalikavak resort.

Refreshments

Walking around the hillside as you admire the windmills and the panoramic view will work up an appetite. Thankfully, there is a small refreshment stand nearby. You can purchase water, tea, coffee, and freshly squeezed orange and pomegranate juice. This makes it a perfect place to stop and rest before continuing with your exploration of Bodrum.

How to Visit

It is free to visit the windmills. You can make the trek to visit them on foot or hire a cab to drive up and then walk back to town. Another option is to visit the windmills as a part of a tour.

When visiting the windmills, wear sturdy and comfortable shoes. The ground is scrubland which can be challenging to those who struggle with mobility. You should also bring sun protection, as there is no shade to seek relief in.
